The World Bank has revealed that global investment needs for water-related infrastructure are expected to reach USD 6.7 trillion by 2030. As these needs continue to grow and the challenges facing water infrastructure worldwide become increasingly complex, innovation is emerging as one of the key pathways for improving investment efficiency and accelerating the development of scalable, applicable solutions.
In this context, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia will host the fifth edition of the Innovation Driven Water Sustainability Conference (IDWS 2026) in Jeddah. Organized by the Saudi Water Authority, the conference will bring together leaders, policymakers, investors, innovators, researchers, and specialists from across the water sector to connect innovation with investment and implementation, while expanding international partnerships to address global water challenges.
The conference will take place from 14 to 16 December 2026 at The Ritz-Carlton, Jeddah, under the patronage of His Royal Highness Prince Khalid Al Faisal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Advisor to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques and Governor of the Makkah Region. It is expected to attract more than 10,000 participants representing over 140 countries, with more than 250 speakers and an accompanying exhibition featuring over 150 global brands.
The conference will bring together a number of funds, financial institutions, and banks, alongside investors, water service providers, and industry and technology leaders. This will connect financing with solutions and implementation needs, support the strategic allocation of capital, and expand the deployment of water solutions and technologies.
The conference focuses on advancing innovations from the research and development stages to implementation and scale. Within this framework, it will host the fourth edition of the Global Prize for Innovation in Water, with total prizes amounting to USD 10 million across its various stages. The Prize supports ideas and solutions addressing major water-sector challenges, from early-stage research to solutions ready for market implementation.
This year, the Prize introduces a new category focused on water conservation and improved water-use efficiency, encouraging innovations that contribute to demand management and expand the adoption of solutions and technologies supporting sustainability.
The conference will also feature MiyahThon, a water hackathon that brings innovators together to develop scalable and applicable solutions. It will also include technical workshops, the accompanying exhibition, and the Global Launch Platform for Water Innovations, enabling innovators and startups to showcase their technologies, products, and solutions before experts, investors, and industry leaders.
The scientific papers cover seven approved tracks: water desalination technologies; water treatment, reuse, and circular economy systems; artificial intelligence, digital transformation, autonomous operations, and water infrastructure security; sectors, systems, and solutions; water in agriculture and food systems; water infrastructure, networks, and asset management; and water quality and emerging contaminants.
The conference agenda is also expanding this year with the addition of an eighth track through a strategic partnership with the Produced Water Society. This will bring specialized expertise in the management, treatment, and reuse of water associated with production operations, while expanding the exchange of relevant knowledge, solutions, and technologies among specialists from Saudi Arabia and around the world.
Hosting the conference in Saudi Arabia gives these tracks a practical dimension, supported by the Saudi water sector’s experience in integrated water resource management, improving the efficiency of the water supply system, water reuse, leveraging research and innovation, and developing engineering capabilities.
Hosting IDWS 2026 reflects an advanced stage in the development of Saudi Arabia’s water sector. The sector has progressed from developing water systems and improving their efficiency to expanding its role in research, innovation, and the development of technologies and solutions, connecting them with implementation and investment needs, and sharing Saudi expertise and capabilities regionally and internationally.
