His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Sultan bin Abdulaziz, Governor of the Madinah Region, emphasized the importance of strengthening institutional collaboration and enhancing integration among relevant entities to ensure the efficient implementation of strategic projects, strengthen water security, improve the quality of water services, and meet the needs of the region’s residents and visitors, in line with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030.
This came during His Royal Highness’s review of water system projects in the Madinah Region, attended by Eng. Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Sheikh, Vice President for Strategy and Local Content at the Saudi Water Authority.
His Royal Highness also reviewed the Saudi Water Authority’s efforts to regulate the water sector, strengthen its governance, and oversee the implementation of its objectives, as well as its key initiatives and strategic projects currently underway. These efforts strengthen water security, improve the efficiency of the water system, and enhance the reliability of services provided to beneficiaries. The region’s current water production capacity stands at 1.22 million cubic meters per day and is targeted to increase to 1.69 million cubic meters per day by 2030.
Eng. Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Sheikh presented to His Royal Highness an overview of the region’s key water system projects in the Madinah Region, including desalination projects, strategic water storage, water transmission, water treatment and reuse, as well as projects implemented through partnerships with the private sector, with investments exceeding SAR 6.8 billion.
These projects include Yanbu 4 Desalination Plant, with a production capacity of 450,000 cubic meters per day; Madinah 3 Wastewater Treatment Plant, with a capacity of 200,000 cubic meters per day; and the Rabigh–Madinah Water Transmission Pipeline, with a capacity of 500,000 cubic meters per day. These projects will strengthen water supplies across the region’s governorates, meet the needs of residents, serve visitors to the Prophet’s Mosque, and keep pace with the growing demand for water services.
The presentation also covered the region’s strategic water storage projects, which include the construction of 11 reservoirs in Madinah with a total storage capacity of 1.87 million cubic meters, in addition to the Strategic Water Storage Project in Yanbu with a storage capacity of 340,000 cubic meters. These projects enhance the readiness of the water system and ensure the reliability of water supplies under normal and emergency conditions.
The presentation also highlighted the efforts of the Saudi Water Authority’s Madinah Region branch to strengthen regulatory oversight and enforcement and monitor compliance with water-related activities. The branch conducted 9,164 inspection visits and recorded 3,490 violations, contributing to improved service efficiency, enhanced water supply reliability, and higher-quality services provided to the region’s residents.
